Quick question. if i were to install windows XP pro on 2 computers with a key that i legitimately bought what would happen? the key is only ment for one seat but if its not blacklisted or anything will M$ give me any trouble?

I think it makes a hash of your hardware configuration, then adds it to the database of all XP keys and the hardware configuration that goes with it. Supposedly you can make one or two changes to your hardware (for example, add more memory) and the hash will stay the same, but MS is really picky about that stuff, they think if you upgrade your processor it's a completely different computer…

so i wouldent be able to use one key 1ce w/o losing the ability to use my key?

I don't think so. You might be able to SE MS into thinking you just upgraded your computer and need a new key (I've heard of that happening) but I dunno, someone with more experience could tell you more.

Oh believe me, it works VERY WELL when you call and say you got a new processor, ram, etc. to get a new key.

i wanted to try out vista on my box upstairs, so I took my parent's computers' key, phoned up m$, they asked me if i was using it on another computer. I said no and they gave me an activation key. simple :)

I've never had a problem with this. I've installed the same copy of XP on 3 different boxes, and they all activated fine

i would do it… but the key and cd im using is the one my rents used on to upgrade the server comp at the office so… if that gets locked or unusable in anyway… tons of client files unaccessable… im thinking its not worth the risk atm but if i can get a key for home or pro anywhere else i'll give it a shot
