HBH Groups

I had an idea, whilst sitting in thought one bright summers day….

anyway, yeh basicly i was thinking, why dont we have user groups, aka people from the same area meeting up every now and then as a kinda social thing, a kinda bring your laptop and a few beers job.

MSN is one thing, but its nothing to spending a few quality hours with some good mates and a subject that fascinates the lot of you.

Well… i live in Cambridge UK (Well just outside) and was wondering if anyone nearby wanted to created the first 'HBH Group'?

No offence or anything, but doesn't this sort of defeat the object of your "Location" on your profile? Because I'm pretty sure, if people are able to read that, they can contact you and say "hey, I live in the same area as you, blah blah blah"

You could automate the process of searching buddies in your location.

well not exactly @ the location thingy, because sometimes people dont wanna have that so accessable, but if there was a group running every month or whatever, you could just check a forum post for the location and show up, no need to tell the world where you live.

and @ cheese, i was thinking something a bit less formal, more kinda every month rather than 6 month/yearly, maybe even weekly.

Are you really going to finding every single user who lives near you? Or just the people you speak to regularly ;)

well it would be nice to have a mix of people coming. Not just one person you speak too and happens to live within 100 miles of you.

I'm actually with lukem_95 on this one as im going to the hbhcon (If my money dosent get lost in the post again ¬_¬) but as someone said it is quite formal and its only in one place and only 20 tickets are sold out of 18829 members so if there was little get togethers across places it could be a chance to get to know more about hbh members and how different people react to this type of community, well im starting to sound a little like a PSHE teacher here so im going to shut up now :happy:

I like this idea, and find it intriguing. and I understand that a lot of people don't want their location being shown to the world, but a simple solution to that would be to have a separate location to show on the profile. That is, I can have my location in my profile say something like Spyware has "<meh>" whereas anyone in the Virginia area could see that I was near them…So that way I wouldn't be handing out my address around to every bot and serial killer, but it would also be vaguely easy me to get together with some people in my area.

@J2383, that's a really good idea. If not on HBH, someone else should code it for a different site. Like where it's just a big hacking group and the entire group organizes topics for the next meeting er whatever. I'd be kinda hard to set up at first, but eventually it'd be a pretty cool idea I guess.

There are groups you can "subscribe" to, that will be located everywhere.

That way you can meet other people from your area. Great idea!!

ooo, i jsut thought when you said subscribe maybe each group across the world could hold mini competitions e.g see who can deface the most things in their team icons or something it would be well cool and the winning team get like 10 points or something :D

I am up for it. That is if anyone lives around the Dallas area. I know me and my friends from my area would be up for it. I would go to the HBH CON, but it is a little too far for me and my wallet.:D

i think its a great idea!!

and since most ppl (like myself) like there location private tehre should be a thing where if someone lives near you or has the same location then it only shows it to people in your area or location… like if someone lives in england, uk it only shows that to people that live in england, uk and ppl that live in cali, usa cant see that. and you can like message ppl with only that location to set up meetings… ???

I think this could help HBH in a big way. Instead of the Teams RTB, maybe a group one?
