Hey guys. Im using a computer that someone gave away for free cus it was effed up. removed everything unneccesary and rqan a ton of cleaners and stuff. Aside from a few error messages its working well. So now im putting all the programs i've used on my other comp on this one. Right now im setting up tor. I remember always having trouble with it until configuring it properly. except i cant remember what i did to make it work. Do I just change the proxy settings in firefox? because those always seem to be reset. Thanks -Tonz

The standard proxy settings in FF for Tor are

HTTP: localhost:8118 SSL: localhost:8118 SOCKS: localhost:9050

Once you've downloaded the tor bundle (the one that includes privoxy as well as vidalia), get the TorButton extension for firefox.

It changes the proxy settings automatically, so you can turn Tor on and off easily.

503 This is Privoxy 3.0.6 on localhost (127.0.0.1), port 8118, enabled Connect failed

Your request for http://google.com/ could not be fulfilled, because the connection to google.com (127.0.0.1) could not be established.

This is often a temporary failure, so you might just try again. More Privoxy:

* Privoxy main page
* View & change the current configuration
* View the source code version numbers
* View the request headers.
* Look up which actions apply to a URL and why
* Toggle Privoxy on or off
* Documentation

Try restarting firefox and vidalia/privoxy.

restarted them… same error… tor is complaining about something. "i dont have enough information to build a circuit." "we now have enough information to build a circuit" "The circuit is working properly"

and now i cant even start it. Vidalia is unable to start tor please make sure it is an executable.

EDIT: problem solved thanks for the help guys. it now shows im connecting from canada. pretty sweet. It is noticably slower though. Can that be tweaked? maybe would it move qucker if i could somehow set it so that it showed i was coming from somewhere else on the eastern seaboard of the US?

Unfortunately, you can't make it much faster. There is a page on the Tor FAQ about setting some values in about:config to make is a little faster.
