Gaining Access to Video Surveillance System

I have been reading here for about a month and that's around when I first learned anything about computer security. I will just come out by saying that I am a newbie, but I am trying. I'm reading everything I can.

Before I ask- I am not going to do this, it's just pure curiosity. If I were to do it, I would be doing a whole lot more research on my own, so don't think I am trying to get spoon fed.

How would someone be able to gain access to the surveillance system to a school or business?

For my old school, I noticed all the cameras were connected directly to the Student Resource Officer's computer in his office, which you needed a key card just to get into the room.

Would it be as simple as gaining an administrator account and finding the program/file everything is in? The school has some security, but not much. It blocks safe mode, but students can use the command prompt.

I'm not expecting a step by step answer, but I would like an overview of what would need done or what would have to be known to be able to do it.

scan your net, try to understand if there are web panels to administrate the cams. Maybe there are a ip whit the port 80 open and when u try to view contents there are a web cam login.

if you get access to your schools survellance you would be able to have so much fun!!! just dont get caught or if you do claim you were about to report the vulnerability to the admin Im just a bit jellous as all my scans of my school network hasnt shown anything so im guessing mines is either analogue or on a seperate network

im a little jealous too… my school is still attached to the old analogue system… and only the janitors wield the power to open that vault :(

Hmm, mine aren't analogue. If I could get the tools and knowledge, hacking my schools surveillance would be a great first real blackhat job.
