ok, so ive been reading up on DoS attacks….ive come up wiht the idea that u send many packets and shit to the server, therfore overloading the server and messing it up or sumthin….but my question is, wuts the point? i mean just to overload a server and make it so that nobody can access it? or does it give u admin rights to the server? or wut?

Thats exactly the point, for skiddies to spam the server silly to piss off the owners

DoS is just as much hacking as SQL injections are… Just cause its very hard to protect yourself from doesn't make it skiddie or n00b…

5 minutes of wikipedia could have told you what DoS is used to do:

DoS attacks have two general forms:

* Force the victim computer(s) to reset or consume its resources such that it can no longer provide its intended service.
* Obstruct the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately.

A "denial-of-service" attack is characterized by an explicit attempt by attackers to prevent legitimate users of a service from using that service. Examples include:

* attempts to "flood" a network, thereby preventing legitimate network traffic;
* attempt to disrupt a server by sending more requests than it can possibly handle, thereby preventing access to a service;
* attempts to prevent a particular individual from accessing a service;
* attempts to disrupt service to a specific system or person.

Just as with any other type of hacking, DoS can be used to crash servers just for the fun of it…

Then can also be used to prevent users from accessing services (anti-viruses, firewalls, etc), which can prove very usefull when rooting :)

DoS attacks (usually DDoS) are also often built into trojans, worms, and viruses…

I agree/ disagree with BluMoose, I mostly agree but I disagree because he said it doesnt make you a "skiddie" or "n00b", the 'net definition of "skiddie" or "script kiddie" or anything along the lines of it means a person who uses other scripts to pretend as if he is hacking it on his own. But DDos or DoS'n mostly is performed in a program, but it will not make you a skiddie if you coded that program or did it from scratch in CMD, and that is where I agree with BluMoose a little.

In my opinion, a script kiddie is anyone who just hacks "for the hell of it" or "for fun" with no particular motivation except for boredom, which is what is usually behind DDoS attacks.

Oh and, BluMoose, DDoS'ing is not hacking. Hacking is defined as: "To gain access to (a computer file or network) illegally or without authorization". Therefore, we can define DDoS attacks as "Being an overall asshole", because nobody benefits.

I am going to have to disagreee with you TS_Death_Angel, hacking is making something do something its not, not gaining access, or none of that. If I modded my PS2 and made it so it had a new boot-up screen did I gain access? I believe not buddy. Thats about it. Okay? Thanks

i do agree with you that that's what the word has come to mean nowadays… however, DDoS can be used (usually in conjunction with trojans) to at least help gain root.

I usually just come here to see if anyone needs help with PHP programming ;P To be honest, this site boils my blood, every single bit of text I read just pisses me off. For example:

"Your friend dies, your upset - 3 million die in africa, you frown" What the fuck is that supposed to mean? If you were actually serious you would have the god damn courtesy to spell you're correctly. God damn. And for the record, I don't frown when people die in Africa.

Anyway, back on topic… I don't think it's possible to gain root by means of DDoSing, though. A system that's been beaten to death by requests isn't just going to cough up the root password :P

No, you're right it wont cough up the root password, but it may stop the firewall from working therefore allowing you easier access

Ah, that's true, but the server might become completely unresponsive as well.

why make it easier? things are more fun the hard way. and its HIGHLY unlikely that DoSing a server will disable the firewall without rendering the server completely useless. you forget how DoS works. by flooding the server with packets it shuts down the services.. therefore if you attempt to send MORE packets to the server when you root to it NOTHING WILL HAPPEN most of the time. believe me i tried it once you suggested it.
