Problem hacking MD5 with JTR

I have this problem, i cant get to crack any MD5 hashes, this is an example, i make a file with this hash named hash.txt:

d6a6bc0db10694a2d90e3a69648f3a03

and then type: john-386 -w=allwords.lst hash.txt

and it says No password hashes

I read the examples but i dont get the shadow thing, and im not certain it is that, please help me.

in the hash.txt file the hash has to be something like this username:d6a6bc0db10694a2d90e3a69648f3a03

that post contained smileys lol :p

the correct format is user:<hash>

Get it?

why use JTR? Use cain & abel for md5. Or try the aim-crack-jake-bot or milw0rm or anything else, just don't use JTR for MD5.

it didnt workrd, it said: Loaded 2 hashes and it was only one :S, even though it could find any guess lol Why is that? isnt JTR the best tool?

JtR is the best tool for DES hashes. For MD5 hashes, there are lots of bruteforcers but Cain is probably the most popular (and it supports MD4, SHA-1 and lots of other hashes too)

anyways, i saw the instalation guide od c&a and i need to install 2 things before the program, i think my dad would kill me if do that, so please tell me how to crack that password or any MD5, i searched google and still see that shadow and unshadow thing, but its for linux (ithink) please explain me.
