IRC And a Question about a Router

When I first decided that I wanted to start delving into the world of hacking, I asked my comp-savvy friend online, what I should do, he said to get a UNIX OS, meet people on IRC, and read everything I can on the subject. However most people on IRC don't talk whatsoever, I have tried a few hackign channels on Efnet and DALnet, which have about 30 people, yet NOBODY TALKS. I was in there all day and nobody says anything so I said "sup" and I met a spanish guy on DALnet, but other than that I've had very short, almost cryptic conversations… So to jump to the point, I'm new, I'm looking for any active hacking channels on IRC, or an explanation for why they are so quiet =P, just somewhere where I can meet people and actually converse. Real Life Example

<sherina84> well…u need to be careful with what u talk in here <sherina84> everyone is watching over newbies <n0ir> Why do I have to be careful, sorry didn't understand <sherina84> what ever u said is a mirror of you <n0ir> A mirror of myself? <sherina84> what u say is what u are <n0ir> huh? Any channels would be much appreciated, on another note: My friend gave me permission to attempt to hack his computer. I nmapped his IP, and came up with an open port 8080 and everything else was filtered, I thought this might be a router, I had to go eat dinner, I came back and portscanned and port 8080 was filtered. I tried telnetting into port 8080 and I GOT IN! It was the most incredible feeling ever, but then I Was faced with a blank line, no prompt, and had no idea what to do but I didn't want to lose teh connection, suddenly the connection was lost, and my friend reported losing internet for about 15 seconds and since then I have not been able to telnet into that port…Was this really a router, if so…what do I do once I've connected via telnet(because nothing would happen when i typed things),

Thanks Again.

Response to router.

What probably happen was that your ISP/Antivirus discovered you entering and closed the port.

if he is using a router, telnet to port 23, enter username "admin" and pass "admin" and 9 times out of 10 you'll be logged into his router config panel.

or if its cisco, use the default cisco logins etc
