Of course /etc/passwd was on there. It has to be. And, for your information, the hashes are stored in /etc/shadow which is only readable by root.

So, in other words, all you got was a userlist.

That passwd file is shadowed, try downloading unshadow (google it) and run that on the box that passwd file is from, and then crack the un-shadowed file.
