Tor...how secure?

How secure is the Tor anonymity network? It seems to mask my IP well, and Wikipedia seems to like it…is it secure enough to be used as my regular proxy? (I have Java disabled while running it, so that flaw is basically dead.)

I've considered setting up a Bittorrent-style anonymity network. Dealing with public/private keying at that point is very difficult, though.

I like Tor.

It's easy to set up, and it's just easy to use.

Me having dial up, it makes my internet extremely slow, but I can change the settings in firefox easily to decide weither or not I want to be anoymous.

well if your using tor its very secure, this is because it uses several nodes just to prase one request, and it also encrypts all requests, so its not sent in plaintext.

however, if you yourself leave tor running for long periods of time, then say for instance a hacker decides to attack a gouvernment website and uses tor, then your comp could very well be the node he is using for the attack.

and that means, feds come knocking on your door.

so, be careful when using it.

Cheese, that exact situation actually happened on my campus. Someone at my school was running a Tor exit node, and someone ended up hacking something in France through his node. He and my school were contacted about the incident and the student was lucky enough not to get blamed for it. He was able to prove that the events took place through the Tor network, but of course the source was untraceable. My advice is to just keep in mind that if your node becomes an exit node, then something like that could happen to you.

yeah there was a talk at some con about how it isn't completely untraceable

I've traced somebody that was using TOR before (At least he claimed to be). Wasn't to hard.

There are lots of trace route tools, although I'm not sure if that what they mean…
