"The Little Hybrid Web Worm that Could."
http://www.darkreading.com/document.asp?doc_id=128355&WT.svl=news1_2
What do you guys think of this, Could this be what we're looking at in a few months or is it just vaporware?
I really hope this isn't something coming soon. EVERY one uses internet, so this virus would essentially spread everywhere. This would be a reason to stop the internet, stop the free trade of information. This would just mean our web browsers become more bloated to stop these 'hybrid worms'.
We could always disable javascript though :)

Well, I can only say: Who actually cares if Google Analytics run their scripts? Ignore the bar, block the JS from the rest of the site, and be happy that you're not letting JS run when you don't want it to. Sometimes, you have to deal with a little annoyance in order to browse safer.

As for the worm, it sounds like it's all based on javascript. Noscript = no worm.
Yes, it wouldn't disable the Internet, it would just make things a lot harder, since we wouldn't have domains, and would have to use IP addresses.
this worm mutates and can learn new exploits. What happens if it comes self concious?? and takes over the internet?? what if it killed us all??
but seriously it could really do some damage….
It COULD do some damage, but i doubt this will ever take off.. Hope not ^^

if it does and does somehow become self concious and decides to kill us all…. infects the russian and us army servers and launches all nukes.
the source code would be worth loads for phishers and advertisers. think: a worm that can infect thousands so you just make it so that it has a small banner on everysite it infects with rental space for ads.

You watch too many movies, This could be useful for building botnets etc ;D

Now I REALLY know you don't know what you're talking about.
The internet has NOTHING to do with domain names. Zero, zip. Domain names are merely an "enhancement" to make things easier. Take the server in my profile, it doesn't use a domain name, but since you can access it from your internet-connected computer, it is thus a part of the "internet".
The internet is just a big-fuckin'-interconnected-glob-of-networks. Nothing more. If you have two computers connected with a cable, you have an "internet", albeit, a very small one (technically an "intranet", assuming the "internet" still exists).

remember when robert morris sent out his worm? it put down 1/10 of the internet [even though at that time on tenth was about six thousand systems] so maybe not the whole internet but worms can crash a good amount

That was 1988, this is 20 years later.
Also, the idea that the internet can never be crashed has nothing to do with the integrity of the software on the computer, as morris exploited in the sendmail bug you mentioned. The internet depends on the networking model, which is oftentimes, a physical layer.
Want to destroy the internet? Physically destroy every single computer in the world, along with every single scrap of cabling.
Yeah, about 2000 networks(made that statstic up) are made a day, a backbone ddos attack, crashes the servers that look after domain names.
IE: http://www.hellboundhackers.org would become 87.106.143.53

[argument] Lol, it can come down man. It has to be powered. There is no other option. Unless of course, they somehow made it all solar powered. The chances are slim.. but it isnt impossible. [/argument]
