Free Gary [the famous Pentagon hacker]
A British hairdresser turned computer hacker who is wanted by US federal prosecutors. MacKinnon is accused of committing "the biggest military hack ever." MacKinnon says he wasn't being malicious; he just wanted to find out if the US government was withholding information about UFOs.
The US Gouvernment wants to extrodite him to be tried in the US, where he could face harsher punishments with possible 80 years in prison. Which is more than double the sentence of a single murderer.

Really. Don't be ignorant. What do you expect from the government? He hacked a highly confidential system in search of information he was not meant to see. There's no excuse.
Imagine if you had a TON of information you would just die if anybody saw. Now someone hacks into your computer with the goal of stealing all your info and telling the world. Would you just say "Oh jeeze, I guess I deserved that :("
Open your eyes, guys.

Personally I disagree with Xero and Dx3. I agree, the man knew what he did was wrong, and he deserves servere punishment. But put yourself in a position similar to the governments. IF my servers had very confidential information on them, and they were hacked, yadda yadda, we catch the guy, and we're fully aware of his intentions. He does nothing other than just look for some meaningless information probably due to one-too-many acid trips.. and you want him to go to jail for 80 years? Confidential or not, he didn't betray his country, he didn't sell information or probably even view it.. it wasn't even his intent, and you agree that his entire life should be destroyed? I'd agree he should serve jail time, but 80 years is simply insane.
