Social engineering part 1 (What is it?)
- "The ART OF MANIPULATION"
- It preys on qualities of human nature, such as the desire to be helpful, the tendency to trust people and the fearof getting in trouble.
- social engineering is a powerful tool because it can not be defended against by software or hardware and since people are usually the weakest link in the security chain it is even more difficult to fix.
(Please excuse the shortness of the article.)
What is Social engineering.
SE is the Human side of breaking into a network or machine.
AKA
"The ART OF MANIPULATION"
Social engineering is the acquisition of sensitive information or inappropriate access privileges by an outsider, based upon building of inappropriate trust relationships with outsiders.
The goal of a social engineer is to trick someone into providing valuable information or access to that information.
It preys on qualities of human nature, such as the desire to be helpful, the tendency to trust people and the fear of getting in trouble.
It can also be defined as the human side of breaking into a network. people with authentication process, firewalls, virtual private networks and network monitoring software are still wide open to attacks.
if this is intended for a company it can be used in a way that an employee may unwittingly give away key information in an email or by answering questions over the phone with someone they don't know or even by talking about a project with co-workers at a local bar after hours.
social engineering is a powerful tool because it can not be defended against by software or hardware and since people are usually the weakest link in the security chain it is even more difficult to fix.

This is an intro of an article. An intro which is not even needed. Do not confuse intro of an article with intro to a subject. There is a big fucking difference. My thoughts? It was crap. A SMALL pile of steaming crap. UberOn told you yesterday not to discuss the obvious; You did worse than that. Here is some advice: In an article, you do not say what you want to do ("I want to go more in depth on this subject", etc), you do it. Also, why was this article accepted in the first place? Sorry for being harsh but it was very necessary. I hope you learn from this and come out with a proper SE article. :)

well not everyone know whats Social Engineering is. I made this one as an intro into what Social Engineering was. It may be an obvious thing to you but not to everyone. Try to have empathy towards other people.

You don't even describe how to do anything. If someone wanted a def. they would wiki it.
ghost 16 years ago
well at least there is a def on here now. it's not like an exploit where you just say do this and it works. SE requires a lot of thought and there is no deffinate way to carry out an attack.

i think you should have submitted one long article rather than 3 short ones. this would be a good intoduction to your other articles probably.

"Fuck me" Nice way to take criticism. Just for that I'm not letting you suck my dick anymore.:D

I liked the "intro", as long as this is going to be a series of articles I don't think there is an issue with that. :)
