How to rip videos from Youtube
How to rip videos from Youtube
This is my first article, I hope you find it useful.
Some of you may know how to do this already, it's just a quick tutorial that describes how to rip videos from Youtube to your desktop.
Firstly, go on to www.youtube.com and select the video you wish to download. Notice that next to it there is a "URL" bar, and an "embed" bar. The content inside the "embed" bar is most important to us.
Open a text editor and copy and paste the content of the "embed" bar into it, as this makes it easier to read. Find the url address in it and paste it into a new internet browser window or tab. It should look something like this: "http://www.youtube.com/v/iQCbgjbrA_M".
When the screen loads the video should fit the whole screen and the url will have changed to something like this: "http://www.youtube.com/p.swf?video_id=iQCbgjbrA_M&eurl=&iurl=http%3A//sjc-static6.sjc.youtube.com/vi/iQCbgjbrA_M/2.jpg&t=OEgsToPDskJbNLkODGWrLrTtMkB3IUNU"
Change the "p.swf" part to "get_video" once the video has fully loaded. A popup will indicate a file download and the file will be downloaded to ur desktop, (or wherever you requested) in flv format.
Chances are your media player will ont be able to play this, so can download a free video converter, and convert it to whatever file format you want. Hope you find this useful.
(If you cannot find a suitable converter I suggest using an Imtoo video converter, to get one simply type "imtoo video converter" or something similar into google.)
Happy hacking :D

why go to all that trouble when there is the Video Downloader extension for firefox? o well a good rating for effort
ghost 17 years ago
yeah i agree there is a video downloader. it does all that for you.
best convertor i would use is PSP Video 9. it converts it to mp4 so you can put it on your ipod or psp.

You can also use Audacity to record it straight as it plays then save it as a mp3, good effort though.:D

So? Even if a video downloader does do it, its quicker to do this if u need a vid on a different computer

I kind of like this. It worked, that's what counts. And maybe his English is.. questionable, I understood just fine what he wrote.

lolololol agree with u entirely spyware, however, just tried it for myself and it does kinda long it. plus, u can't watch the videos without converting them (oh but i tried) which is not what i was expecting despite it saying that clearly above. i dunno. i guess theres no harm in knowing different ways of doing the same thing i guess. :ninja:

hello first i would like to compliment you on your article because this seems like a very usefull technique.
however, when i tried it myself, after i copy the embedded url to the address bar, there is no 'p.swf' in the url, but there is a 'l.swf' instead. when i replace that with 'get_video', it doesn't work.
any suggestions are appreciated thanks
